Rethinking The Fall Of Lucifer - PART TWO

James 1:14-15

14 But every person is tempted when he is drawn away, enticed and baited by his own evil desire (lust, passions).

15 Then the evil desire, when it has conceived, gives birth to sin, and sin, when it is fully matured, brings forth death.

The Angels Did Not Fall At The Same Time As Lucifer

In Ezekiel 28:16 God says to Lucifer, “you sinned and I have destroyed you, O covering cherub, from the midst of the stones of fire.”  Lucifer used his great beauty and wisdom to steal worship and adoration from his Creator, using the tree of the knowledge of good and evil as bait to lure the man and his wife into following after him instead of Elohim.

Lucifer’s judgment for this was being “destroyed” (removed) from the, “midst of the stones of fire.”  That is, he was no longer allowed to enter and participate in the glorious presence (i.e. – “fire”) of God and share in His service, or partake of fellowship among His other messengers (angels).

Daniel 7:9-10 "I kept looking until thrones were set up, and the Ancient of Days took His seat; His vesture was like white snow, and the hair of His head like pure wool.  His throne was ablaze with flames; its wheels were a burning fire.  10 A river of fire was flowing and coming out from before Him; Thousands upon thousands were attending Him, and myriads upon myriads were standing before Him; the court sat, and the books were opened.”  NAS

Lucifer’s “fall” as it has been called, was the time when he sought after the man and his wife (Adam & Eve) for a following.  Lucifer felt his splendor and wisdom warranted adoration and worship, and he likened himself to being equal with God.  At this time “unrighteousness” was found in him; unrighteousness is defined as using fraud with the intent to withhold merited praise from God.

Lucifer tried to seduce the woman by lying to her, “You shall not surely die!”  He is a liar… and the father of lies!  In Isaiah 14:13 God says of Lucifer, “For you have said in your heart: 'I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God.’”  The “stars” of God are His people, His children, and this is NOT a reference to angels.  One must differentiate between the, “stones of fire,” and the, “stars of heaven.”  Just because the Hebrew word for Lucifer means, “morning star,” does not mean “stars” symbolize all fallen or unfallen angels.  In the scripture, God’s chosen people are referred to as “stars” because they shine as individuals by reflecting the glory ands light of God.

Exodus 32:13 Remember Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, Thy servants to whom Thou didst swear by thyself, and didst say to them, 'I will multiply your descendants as the stars of the heavens…’ NAS

Deuteronomy 1:10 'The LORD your God has multiplied you, and behold, you are this day as the stars of heaven for multitude.’  NAS

Deuteronomy 10:22 Your fathers went down to Egypt seventy persons in all, and now the LORD your God has made you as numerous as the stars of heaven. NAS

Deuteronomy 28:62 Then you shall be left few in number, whereas you were as the stars of heaven for multitude, because you did not obey the LORD your God. NAS

1 Chronicles 27:23 But David did not count those twenty years of age and under, because the LORD had said He would multiply Israel as the stars of heaven. NAS

Nehemiah 9:23 Their children You also multiplied as the stars of heaven… AMP

Hebrews 11:12 So from one man, though he was physically as good as dead, there have sprung descendants whose number is as the stars of heaven and as countless as the innumerable sands on the seashore. AMP

There is no scriptural support for the doctrine held by so many Christians that a large number of angels “fell” from their lofty position in the heavens at the same time Lucifer fell; this is a Christian myth.  Yes, there are demons, and yes, they are in some form of subordination and/or submission to Satan, but we do not have enough data to determine at what time and in what quantities these dark angels fell (See Matthew 25:41 & Revelation 12:9).

Angels have free will even though they are appointed as “ministering spirits” unto the heirs of salvation (Read Hebrews 1:13-14).  They have the capacity to choose good or to choose evil during their entire existence and until the time when Christ sits upon his glorious throne and judges the nations.  At that time, even true believers will judge the angels (1 Corinthians 6:3).

2 Peter 2:4 For if God did not spare angels when they sinned, but cast them into hell and committed them to pits of darkness, reserved for judgment…     NAS

Many theologians have interpreted 2 Peter 2:4 to mean the angels all sinned at one time, and were subsequently, “cast into hell.”  This erroneous interpretation suggests fallen angels (i.e. – demons) are not active in their lives today because they remain impotent being imprisoned in chains of darkness and restrained until the time of their final judgment.  One of the greatest deceptions promulgated in the mainline churches today is that there is no such thing as a living and active devil and that demonic influence is limited to archaic Bible stories.  This view hinders one’s ability to do spiritual warfare against them (read Ephesians 6:10-17).  The more literal translation of 2 Peter 2:4 below gives a completely different impression:

The Appropriate Translation

2 Peter 2:4

For this reason, if God did not treat angels that missed the mark leniently; but instead, in bonds of gloom, like being cast into Tartarus, the subterranean abyss of Greek mythology where demigods were punished, they are to be surrendered into a reserved tribunal. (TAT)

Peter contrasts the type of judgment awaiting ungodly people who once knew the Lord and then turned away from Him with the type of judgment awaiting the angels who sin and miss the mark of God’s standard of truth.  Tartarus is used only once here in the New Testament, and it symbolizes what the Greek pagan religions believed to be a place of torment for demigods who act wickedly.  In similar fashion, there awaits eternal “bonds of gloom” for the fallen angels.  Once again, the text does not fix any definite time lines indicating when or how many angels sinned, leaving the conclusion subject to more scrutiny.

Some scholars say Jesus existed in the Old Testament as the Preincarnate Christ.  This is simply not true because Jesus was born of a woman (Mary) and created in her womb BY GOD (Read Matthew 1:18-20; Galatians 4:4-6).  These so-called scholars use Jesus’ words to support their doctrine that Satan fell before the world was created:

Luke 10:18 He replied, "I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven”  (From New International Version)

In Luke 10:18 the NIV and other translations make the distinctive error of translating their theology instead of the original Greek language.  Various Bible translations make it appear as though Christ lived contemporary with Satan when he sinned for the first time.  Doctrinal prejudice often does the translating and translators unwittingly use their text as a platform to espouse theology.  Below is a literal expanded and amplified translation of Luke 10:18 for comparison:

The Appropriate Translation

Luke 10:18

And he said to them, “As a spectator, I gazed with particular interest, carefully observing the manner in which Satan fell like lightning, from splendor to ruin.”

Jesus is talking to the seventy he sent out with authority over the demons.  When they returned, excited they had this newfound power, Jesus rebukes them for rejoicing over the wrong issue.  They should have rejoiced, not that the demons were subject to them, but that their names were recorded in heaven!  Below is the Amplified Bible text, with The Appropriate Translation (highlighted) inserted to replace verse 18:

Luke 10:17-20 The seventy returned with joy, saying, “Lord, even the demons are subject to us in your name!”  18   And he said to them, “As a spectator, I gazed with particular interest, carefully observing the manner in which Satan fell like lightning from splendor to ruin.”  19   Behold!  I have given you authority and power to trample upon serpents and scorpions, and physical and mental strength and ability over all the power that the enemy possesses; and nothing shall in any way harm you; 20 nevertheless, do not rejoice at this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rejoice that your names are enrolled in heaven.”  AMP

It is clear Jesus was carefully observing how Satan’s host of evil spirits was defeated.  He sat as a spectator, so to speak, watching what authority his Father God had given to these disciples, and how quickly they were able to dethrone the evil one!  This text proves there is no such thing as the “preincarnate Christ” (or God-the-Son), as most theologians purport.  Instead it shows Jesus was a man carefully observing the works of God.

It is no wonder Jesus uses this language to describe what he saw; he looked with eyes of the spirit, not with carnal sight.  The Greek word for “lightning” (astrapeén) comes from a root word “aster “ meaning, “a star (as spread over the sky).”  We derive our word, “asteroid or asteroidal,” from this Greek word aster, which means, “resembling a star or pertaining to the asteroids.”

Asteriated means radiated; presenting diverging rays, like a star; as asteriated sapphire.  Not surprising an asterite is described best as a, “star stone.”  In other words, like an asteroid fragments and falls apart as it takes a nose dive thru space, Jesus sees Satan’s kingdom falling apart as he authorizes disciples to do the Father’s bidding.  God’s light becomes lightning judgment to those that oppose Him, and His lightning ALWAYS hits the mark!

Job 36:30-32 Behold, He spreads His lightning against the dark clouds and covers the roots of the sea.  31 For by His clouds God executes judgment upon the peoples; He gives food in abundance.  32 He covers His hands with the lightning and commands it to strike the mark.  AMP

Ezekiel 1:14 And the living creatures darted back and forth like a flash of lightning.  AMP

Ezekiel 21:9-10 "Son of man, prophesy and say, 'This is what the Lord says: 'A sword, a sword, sharpened and polished- 10 sharpened for the slaughter, polished to flash like lightning!’” (From New International Version)

John Calvin the reformer was the progenitor of a heinous doctrine known as “Predestination” or simply, “Calvinism.”  Calvin believed that only GOD decides who is part of His “elect” and who is damned to eternal destruction.  He built a theology widely embraced and propagated to this day by the Baptist and Presbyterian denominations, Independent Bible Churches (IBC) and others.

According to Calvin and his contemporary John Knox, there are five points upon which hinge the teaching of Predestination.  These five points are characterized by an acronym ‘TULIP’; below is a brief summary of what the doctrine espouses.  It is important to have some idea of Calvin’s doctrine to comprehend WHY it is believed all the angels fell long BEFORE the scenario in Eden took place:

T = Total depravity of all mankind; man is unable to choose.

U = Unconditional election; God chooses the elect; they are not involved in the choice.

L = Limited atonement; Christ’s redemption is limited ONLY to the elect; everyone else is predestined to eternal destruction with no choice in their future.

I = Irresistible grace; the “elect” cannot help but receive God’s grace because it is irresistible; if they CHOSE to receive His grace, it would no longer be grace; Calvinist’s often say, “A dead man cannot choose.”

P = Perseverance of the saints; they throw this one in there to justify whatever good they engage in… go figure.

Calvinism inspired the teaching that Satan, along with his cohort of dark angels (demons) with him, “fell” as a part of God’s “unconditional election.”  Satan was “predestined” to fall, and had no choice in the matter, nor did the hoards of demons that followed after him.  Calvin’s views on Predestination are counterfeit doctrine, but it is essential to understand them to unmask the devil’s trickery in the church.

The Serpent’s Hangout

In Genesis 3:1 it says, “Now the serpent was more crafty than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made.”  The Hebrew word for “crafty” is “`aruwm” and means, “cunning, sly, prudent, subtle, shrewd or sensible.”  By itself, this Hebrew word does not connote evil; the CONTEXT in which it is used determines the MEANING and application of the same.  It stems from a root word origin, “`aram” meaning, “to be or make bare; through the idea of smoothness.”  Of interest is the fact that AFTER they sinned, the man and the woman had their, “eyes opened” and they knew they were, “naked (bare).”

There is good reason to interpret the events that transpired in Eden literally and nothing precludes a figurative interpretation.  The serpent was more sensible, more subtle, and much more cunning than any beast of the field that the LORD God had made.  He made himself “bare” in the sense of exposing himself to the woman.  It is possible Lucifer was embodied in the Aesculapian snake that symbolizes the Greek god of medicine, Asclepius. Asclepius is often pictured with his staff, around which is entwined one of these snakes.  Smooth, glossy, and slender, the snake (right) has a uniformly brown back with a streak of darker color behind the eyes. The snake's belly is yellowish or whitish and has ridged scales that catch easily on rough surfaces, making it especially adapted for climbing trees.

Another possibility is that Lucifer revealed himself in the form of the emerald tree boa.  The emerald tree boa is another member of the nonpoisonous boa family of snakes with a prehensile tail and green coloring, which enables it to navigate discreetly in its arboreal environment.  A prehensile tail makes the serpent able to take hold of things, especially by wrapping around them.

PART ONE of this study gives a detailed explanation of the “covering” given to Lucifer when he was in Eden (Ezekiel 28:13).  The colors of his covering were gold (a glistening yellowish color) which is said to be INSIDE Lucifer (representative of his works, which had previously been tried in fire to purify them to a gold-like state), and onyx or sapphire (a deep iridescent green color) and eben stone, quite possibly a brownish-black color similar to ebony wood.  These colors match the description of either species of snake mentioned above, especially given the atmosphere was uniform and warm enough for the survival and proliferation of both types.  One must think antediluvian and recognize the species may also no longer exist today.

The age-old question, “Why did God make Lucifer a serpent?” is forever going to be a source of curiosity and an enigma of sorts.  The Hebrew word for serpent means, “to hiss.”  This Hebrew word is key to understanding the nature of the beast; it originates from nachash (OT 5172), which means, “to hiss, i.e. whisper a (magic) spell; generally, to prognosticate.”  It is translated elsewhere as, “omen, divination, a spell (magic), witchcraft, horoscope, etc.”

To prognosticate means to foreshow or to indicate a future event by present signs.  This is what the serpent did to the woman, “You surely shall not die!  For God knows that in the day you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil."  Lucifer’s ‘prognosis’ to the woman for was cheery and happy days, because she would not die, and she’d have lots more knowledge.

Next time you go to the doctor, you’ll know where the word “prognosis” comes from and why the serpent was likely Aesculapian after the Greek god of medicine, Asclepius.  In medicine, prognosis is the art of foretelling the event of a disease; that is, the judgment of the event of a disease by particular symptoms.  Lucifer’s prognosis was altogether bankrupt, and both man and woman chose the wrong physician for their diagnosis.  This demonstrates the importance of hearing from God and knowing His word, so your prognosis will be one based upon the truth.

It is difficult for many Christians to fathom why God would plant a tree in His beautiful garden, knowing it was the dwelling place for the evil one.  When God finished His entire creation, including all the creatures, it was declared to be, “very good” (Genesis 1:31).  Lucifer’s initial transgression can easily be tied to the events in the temptation of the woman, therefore his existence before that was not one of evil.

Consider the following points taken from Ezekiel 28:12-19 and Isaiah 14:12-13…  Lucifer was created by God, and placed in Eden, the garden of God for a purpose; he was to function as a covering cherub.  This meant his role was to protect the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, and direct man away from its’ deadly fruit.

From the day he was created, Lucifer was blameless in his ways UNTIL unrighteousness (fraud) was found in him.  It was Lucifer’s heart that was lifted up because of his beauty and he corrupted his wisdom by reason of his splendor.  He profaned his “sanctuaries” and there is every reason to believe one of those sanctuaries was the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.

We do not have a time frame for when Lucifer was actually created; nothing indicates he was created in Eden, but it is certain God placed him there.  The fact is, Lucifer was, “blameless in all his ways,” from the time he was created.  To be, “blameless,” one must have lived a cycle of life whereby his or her free will is given the opportunity to choose righteousness or wickedness.  Therefore, Lucifer most likely is one of a certain number of overcomers known in scripture as, “cherub,” or the plural, “cherubim,” that were brought by God to help Him establish this creation…  More on this topic later.

In the beginning the earth was formless and void, and darkness covered the earth (Genesis 1:1-2).  This was not the beginning of God, or the beginning of His creative handiwork.  As far as our pea-size brains are concerned, the eternal Creator has always been fashioning and making beings that have the ability to choose. God was not satisfied with a dark covering over a void earth, so He spoke light into existence (Genesis 1:3-4).  He saw the light was “good” so He separated the light from the darkness.  The natural inference is that the darkness was not so good.

The main point here is that DARKNESS HAS ALWAYS EXISTED just as light has always existed.  The knowledge of darkness cannot exist without the knowledge of light.  Therefore, the knowledge of “good” (light) cannot exist without the knowledge of “evil” (darkness).    Just because God planted the tree of the knowledge of good and evil in the garden to begin with does not imply that He planted active evil in the garden.  A “tree” can be considered inanimate, and it therefore does not have the capacity for choice.

The photograph of the emerald tree boa illustrates why a tree makes the perfect habitation for a serpent.  Perhaps Lucifer had no choice whatsoever in being made a serpent; this may have been the body Elohim designated to guard the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.  Maybe it was his stealthy maneuvering about the tree, and the beauty of his iridescent skin that turned Lucifer’s head, and caused him to let pride swell his heart to be like the Most High.  We can only speculate from scripture, which provides us with this detailed account of Lucifer’s existence in Eden.

Some scholars speculate Lucifer felt his stature was “lower” than the stature of man who stood upright, and was made in the likeness of God.  There is no internal evidence in scripture for such a view.  If anything, scripture alludes to the angels being of a much higher status or existence than earthy mankind.  Even Jesus was made, for a little while lower than the angels (Hebrews 2:7-9).

Ezekiel 28:18 says of Lucifer, “… you profaned your sanctuaries.”  Strong’s defines the Hebrew word for “sanctuaries” as follows:

Sanctuaries = OT: 4720 miqdash (mik-dawsh'); or miqqedash (Exodus 15:17) (mik-ked-awsh'); from OT: 6942; a consecrated thing or place, especially, a palace, sanctuary (whether of Jehovah or of idols) or asylum; OT: 6942 =

Qadash (kaw-dash'); a primitive root; to be (causatively, make, pronounce or observe as) clean (ceremonially or morally)  (Biblesoft's New Exhaustive Strong's Numbers and Concordance with Expanded Greek-Hebrew Dictionary. Copyright (c) 1994, Biblesoft and International Bible Translators, Inc.)

Our contemporary use of the word translated as a sanctuary or an asylum would be, “a refuge, safe haven, shelter, and place of safety or protection.”  This refuge was “set apart” or consecrated by God; it was designated for a specific purpose, and Lucifer’s role was to act as its protector.  He was assigned to cover this tree, and to keep it from being consumed by mankind, without in any way violating the bounds of man’s free will of course.  This explains WHY in Ezekiel 28:12 Lucifer was, “full of wisdom,” or more literally these Hebrew words, “maalee' chaakªmaah,” can be translated, “jam-packed with intelligence.”  He would need a keen mind and great knowledge to relate to this new creation (man) made in the image and likeness of Elohim.

To further prove Lucifer did not “fall” before his being ordained and anointed in Eden the garden of God, the AMG Complete WordStudy Bible is used to unveil details of the definition of the Hebrew word, “chokhmah,” translated as, “wisdom,” in Ezekiel 28:12:

“Wisdom” = 2451. Chokhmah; this feminine noun originates from chakham (2449). It means wisdom, knowledge, experience, intelligence, insight, and judgment. It is always used in a positive sense. True wisdom leads to reverence for the Lord (Job 28:28; Proverbs 2:2) Therefore, skeptics will never find this kind of wisdom (see James 3:13–18), and they will never know the true meaning of life (Proverbs 14:6, 7). Chokhmah is used to describe an entire range of human experience: embroidering (Exodus 28:3), metal-working (Exodus 31:3, 6), military strategy (Isaiah 10:13), diplomacy (Deuteronomy 34:9; 2 Samuel 14:20; Ezekiel 28:4, 5), shrewdness (2 Samuel 20:22), prudence (Psalm 37:30; 90:12; Proverbs 10:31), and practical spirituality (Isaiah. 33:6). God is all–powerful and all–knowing. Therefore, all wisdom has its source in Him (Job 11:6; 12:13; 28:20, 28; Proverbs 2:6; 3:19; Jer. 10:12). Chokhmah is personified only to a point—it does not have a separate existence (Proverbs 1:20; 8:1–31; 9:1, 2). The figure of wisdom was never regarded as independent of God.  It is only one of His attributes.

The wisdom, knowledge, experience, intelligence, insight, and judgment OF Lucifer began in a positive sense.   This stature of wisdom he possessed was not regarded as independent of God.  The “tree” he inhabited provided the man and his wife ACCESS to the KNOWLEDGE of evil.  No act of evil had been accomplished, yet the desire to “know” proved to be a greater force within man than to simply trust and not know.  The “knowing” was something he had not yet partaken of.

The man (Adam) HAD been able to consume and partake of what was called, “good,” in the garden (Read Genesis 2:9 with 2:16-17).  Out of the ground the LORD God caused to grow every tree that is pleasing to the sight and good for food and commanded the man, saying, "From any tree of the garden you may eat freely; but from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat from it you shall surely die. "

Considering the colors of Lucifer’s “covering” were green, and some sort of brownish color, it is not a far stretch to also view the tree of the knowledge of good and evil as being one and the same as his safety, refuge, or covering.  That is, the tree matched Lucifer’s own colors so perfectly, so smoothly, the visual transition between the serpent and the tree’s branches was nearly seamless, and this camouflage caused him to blend in with it.  This could actually give the tree the appearance of animation if the serpent were to perch his slithering frame in just the right fashion along the horizontal branches.

At this point it is important to see the parallels between Lucifer’s camouflage and how he used it to seduce the woman, and the way certain men and women in church leadership blend in with the sheep, wearing the façade of wool, beneath which lies a wolf.  In fact, it is virtually identical in nature to what the serpent did using fraud to withhold from God what is due to Him.  These false shepherds promise God’s children supernatural revelation and wisdom, if only they give their money and devotion to the cause.  Then undiscerning Christians who don’t have a love for the truth fall into deception like the woman did, only to find out they have been duped.  Many never repent but then hide in the cover of “church” thinking all will be okay since everyone else is doing it.

As the covering cherub Lucifer, God’s light bearer, was assigned a position in the garden to guard the tree, diverting anyone from willfully seeking to live by its poison produce.  In Exodus 36:1 when the sanctuary of Yahweh was being built, every wise hearted man came, “in whom the LORD put wisdom and understanding to know how to work all manner of work for the service of the sanctuary, according to all that the LORD had commanded.”

Paul exhorts the elders in the church, "Be on guard for yourselves and for all the flock, among which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to shepherd the church of God which He purchased with His own blood.  I know that after my departure savage wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock; and from among your own selves men will arise, speaking perverse things, to draw away the disciples after them.” (Acts 20:28-30; NAS)  The roles have changed since the garden of Eden but the heart of God remains steadfast.  He always sets those who are faithful in positions of guardianship to keep watch over His beloved.  When an overseer uses his position to exalt self, he takes on the nature of the serpent, and becomes a child of God’s wrath… yikes!

The Hebrew word for “wisdom” is “chokhmah” providing evidence for WHY God gave Lucifer a spirit of wisdom.  Elohim wanted him to guard the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, and to know how to work all manner of service of this particular sanctuary, and to do it according to all that the LORD had commanded.  Lucifer rebelled, disobeyed God, and used the tree for his own purposes… to gather a following of men made in God’s likeness, and thereby making his position and status like the Most High.

Is this any different than what men do today?  Rather than see the sanctuary of God as being His people, who are living stones, built together for God’s tabernacle, ministers view the church building as the, “house of God.”  Every Sunday morning in churches in every nation preachers stand behind the pulpit (a wooden replica of the tree of knowledge… think about it) and bellow these words, “Welcome people, welcome to God’s house… now let us pray.”

The Most High does not dwell in buildings built by men’s hands because the tabernacle of God is among and within men.  Individually and collectively WE are the temple of His spirit, and the true worshippers worship Him in spirit and truth.  The churches in general have lost sight of a personal relationship with one another, and have become dependent upon a weekly monologue in the form of a sermon.  Christians have exchanged the intimate knowledge of God that can only be experienced, as we love each other, and exchanged it for a lie in the form of religion.  The churches are eating from the tree of the knowledge of good AND evil, which is why they are so dead.

Further “proof” that Lucifer was appointed to guard the way to the tree of the knowledge of good and evil is seen in what happens AFTER MAN SINS.  Whereas prior to his transgression Adam and his wife had access to the tree of life, AFTER the transgression God sent another covering cherubim (plural) to guard the path to the tree of life.

The Tree Of Life

Vs.

The Tree Of The Knowledge Of Good & Evil

Genesis 3:23-24 Therefore the Lord God sent him forth from the Garden of Eden to till the ground from which he was taken.  24 So God drove out the man; and He placed at the east of the Garden of Eden the cherubim and a flaming sword, which turned every way, to keep and guard the way to the tree of life. [Revelation 2:7; 22:2,14,19.]  AMP

The knowledge of good and evil has existed throughout time, even before the creation of this universe, locked up in the reality of free will and choice.  Before He decided to fabricate this heaven and earth, God knew the power of choice was not limited only to that which is classified as “good.”

In fact, the intimate knowledge of both good and evil is reserved only for those who have reached a certain age and condition of maturity.  Little children cannot make such discretionary judgments, which explains why Jesus was age thirty before being tested in the wilderness by the devil.

Deuteronomy 1:39 “… your children who at this time cannot discern between good and evil… “   AMP

In the OT the angel of God is noted for understanding the knowledge of good and evil.

2 Samuel 14:17 “…for as the angel of God, so is my lord the king to discern good and evil.”   NAS

God asked Solomon to choose whatever he desired, and what would be most helpful in guiding Israel; Solomon’s request was for the discernment between good and evil.  Only with GOD’S HELP would he be able to judge and rule the people wisely, and have accurate understanding between what is good and evil.

1 Kings 3:9 "So give your servant an understanding heart to judge your people to discern between good and evil.  For who is able to judge this great people of yours?"   NASU

Israel’s king asks for an understanding heart to discern good from evil, which shows the association between leadership’s responsibility to protect and the wisdom derived ONLY from one’s intimate relationship with God and His word.  Lucifer was in a position of leadership; he was anointed as a guardian cherub.  But he chose to corrupt that wisdom by doing what he did INDEPENDENT of God’s influence.

What is “good” and what is “evil?”  The fruit of good is endless as is the fruit of evil; one produces life, the other death; one gives light, the other darkness.

Psalm 34:11-16 Come, you children, listen to me; I will teach you the fear of the LORD.  12 Who is the man who desires life and loves length of days that he may see good?  13 Keep your tongue from evil and your lips from speaking deceit.  14 Depart from evil and do good; seek peace and pursue it.  15 The eyes of the LORD are toward the righteous and His ears are open to their cry.  16 The face of the LORD is against evildoers, to cut off the memory of them from the earth.   NASU

The knowledge of good is equivalent to the fear of the LORD; its partakers are called righteous; those who eat of this fruit guard the ground (i.e. –the heart is the ground) in which “good” grows; they keep their tongue from the dialogue of deceit.  They don’t lie to their spouse or children; they don’t cheat on their taxes, and are honest in all of their business transactions.  They don’t take a “peek” at pornography or sexually explicit images on the Internet or television just because no one is watching.  Their fear of God is healthy, active, and alive; they practice what they preach and repent when they don’t.

Little white lies are not okay with the ones who fear God and keep His commandment.  They don’t hide themselves from the LORD when they sin; freely they confess their sins to God and their faults one to another.  They seek to keep things in the light so that the darkness won’t overpower or imprison them in chains of sin.  They “grow” in God’s light (truth) and become “trees” whose leaves bring healing.  There is a close connection between the healing leaves and the humility involved in confessing one’s weaknesses to others and the intercessory prayer offered on behalf of the brethren.

Revelation 22:2 And on either side of the river was the tree of life, bearing twelve kinds of fruit, yielding its fruit every month; and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations.   NAS

James 5:16 Confess to one another therefore your faults; your slips, your false steps, your offenses, your sins and pray also for one another, that you may be healed and restored to a spiritual tone of mind and heart.  The earnest heartfelt, and continued prayer of a righteous man makes tremendous power available dynamic in its working.  AMP

Even the apostle Paul, in his letter to the churches in the city of Corinth, acknowledges the necessity of demonstrative evil, in order that what is righteous and good will shine forth with much greater brilliance.  In his first letter he chastises the church because there are factions and social cliques, much like what exists in churches across America today.

1 Corinthians 11:18-19 For in the first place, when you assemble as a congregation, I hear that there are cliques (divisions and factions) among you; and I in part believe it, 19 For doubtless there have to be factions or parties among you in order that they who are genuine and of approved fitness may become evident and plainly recognized among you.

The tree of the knowledge of good and evil has to exist in order that the righteous will stand apart from the unrighteous by virtue their actions.  It is a given (reality) that evil exists alongside good; one cannot exist without the other.  Light exists only because darkness exists, and vice versa.

When one church or group of believers begins to view itself as greater in knowledge and personal worth than others, and cliques are formed, factions arise, fueled by petty jealousy and the desire for notoriety.  The tree of life is left untouched, and an appetite for the knowledge of good and evil drives churches into a flesh-eating frenzy, in which believers bite and devour one another!

Galatians 5:14-15 For the whole Law concerning human relationships is complied with in the one precept, ‘You shall love your neighbor as you do yourself.’  [Leviticus 19:18.]  15 But if you bite and devour one another in partisan strife, be careful that you and your whole fellowship are not consumed by one another.  AMP

This sad reality has existed throughout time and memorial, but standing in direct opposition and in greater splendor is the righteous deeds of those faithful few who understand the true knowledge of the Most High does not puff one up, but WORKS through LOVE (Galatians 5:6).  Thus we see God’s design was to place the tree of the knowledge of good in evil in the garden in order that it might stand in stark contrast to the tree of life.  The tree of life in Revelation chapter 22 is only for those found worthy to eat of its fruit; those whose robes are white, and whose deeds are found to be righteous:

Revelation 22:14 Blessed (happy and to be envied) are those who cleanse their garments, that they may have the authority and right to approach the tree of life and to enter through the gates into the city. [Genesis 2:9; 3:22,24.]  Amplified Bible

Gold represents the righteous deeds (works) one does in the fear of the Lord.  Initially gold was Lucifer’s protection because he was “blameless” in ALL of his ways from the day he was created (Ezekiel 28:15).  His splendor was the fire of God within him reflecting the beauty of his gold (i.e. – blameless ways).  However, greed corrupted the gold within that protected Lucifer; his deeds turned from being blameless to being full of slander, lies, fraud and pride.

Lamentation 4:1 How dark the gold has become, how the pure gold has changed! The sacred stones are poured out at the corner of every street.  NAS

The “gold” was Lucifer’s inner beauty and it reflected the value and worth of what was precious in the sight of God.  Gold’s luster and its’ exquisite beauty is unrecognizable in the darkness of sin; thus Lucifer’s inner beauty changed, and became “dark.”

James 5:1-5 Come now you rich people; weep aloud and lament over the miseries (the woes) that are surely coming upon you. 2 Your abundant wealth has rotted and is ruined, and your many garments have become moth-eaten. 3 Your gold and silver are completely rusted through, and their rust will be testimony against you and it will devour your flesh as if it were fire.  You have heaped together treasure for the last days. 4 But look!  Here are the wages that you have withheld by fraud from the laborers who have reaped your fields, crying out for vengeance; and the cries of the harvesters have come to the ears of the Lord of hosts. 5 Here on earth you have abandoned yourselves to soft (prodigal) living and to the pleasures of self-indulgence and self-gratification.  You have fattened your hearts in a day of slaughter. AMP

Like all who would follow in his arrogance and materialism, Lucifer became tarnished when he lost the light of God; when he used fraud to obtain what belonged only to God, the “fire” was removed from the “midst” of Lucifer, and his “works” were burned up as worthless.  So too, in the church, only those works which are done in the righteousness of God’s LOVE and done in His TRUTH will stand the fire of His judgments.  Our God IS a consuming fire!

The tree of the knowledge of good and evil speaks of the Lucifer’s domain; it was the place he was ordained and anointed by God as guardian cherub:

Genesis 3:8-24 They heard the sound of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God among the trees of the garden. 9 Then the LORD God called to the man, and said to him, " Where are you?" 10 He said, " I heard the sound of You in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid myself." 11 And He said, "Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree of which I commanded you not to eat?" 12 The man said, "The woman whom You gave to be with me, she gave me from the tree, and I ate." 13 Then the LORD God said to the woman, "What is this you have done?" And the woman said, " The serpent deceived me, and I ate." 14 The LORD God said to the serpent, "Because you have done this, cursed are you more than all cattle, and more than every beast of the field; on your belly you will go, and dust you will eat all the days of your life; 15 and I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her seed; He shall bruise you on the head, and you shall bruise him on the heel." 16 To the woman He said, "I will greatly multiply your pain in childbirth, in pain you will bring forth children; yet your desire will be for your husband, and he will rule over you." 17 Then to Adam He said, "Because you have listened to the voice of your wife, and have eaten from the tree about which I commanded you, saying, 'You shall not eat from it’; cursed is the ground because of you; in toil you will eat of it All the days of your life. 18 "Both thorns and thistles it shall grow for you; And you will eat the plants of the field; 19 By the sweat of your face You will eat bread, Till you return to the ground, Because from it you were taken; For you are dust, And to dust you shall return." 20 Now the man called his wife's name Eve, because she was the mother of all the living. 21 The LORD God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife, and clothed them. 22 Then the LORD God said, "Behold, the man has become like one of us, knowing good and evil; and now, he might stretch out his hand, and take also from the tree of life, and eat, and live forever"-- 23 therefore the LORD God sent him out from the garden of Eden, to cultivate the ground from which he was taken. 24 So He drove the man out and at the east of the Garden of Eden He stationed the cherubim and the flaming sword, which turned every direction to guard the way to the tree of life.     NASU

After man sinned God said, “Behold, the man has become like one of us…” That is, man (Adam) became like the one of two personages…God or Satan.  In the account of Genesis 3:14-15, 22-24 only four individuals are mentioned, which are God (Elohim or Yahweh), the serpent (Lucifer), the man (Adam), and the man’s wife (Eve).

So who is God speaking to when He says, “Behold, the man has become like one of us?”  God is referring to the Lucifer, because when Adam and Eve sinned, they became like the serpent (in the sense of unrighteousness).  Genesis 3:14 affirms this interpretation, because the text begins by saying, “And the LORD God said to the serpent, "Because you have done this, “Cursed are you…” and then later, “Behold, the man has become like one of us…”

Lucifer’s first-time transformation from anointed cherub to an angel masquerading as a messenger of light was using the tree of the knowledge of good and evil to seduce the woman, who looked at the distorted (yet beautiful) tree of good and evil, and partook of its fruit, then gave to her husband, who ate also, knowing he was transgressing the command of Elohim.

To prevent the man from consuming the tree of life and for his own aggrandizement, God banished Adam and his wife from the garden, and placed guardian cherubim to greet all who choose to eat from the tree of life.  From this time forward, only those who have the right may eat of it; to qualify ones’ speech must be soothing and give forth fresh water and not bitter.  Only those who seek God’s wisdom and understanding can partake of the tree of life.

The tree of life refers to the secret dwelling place of the Most High and its fruit produced life eternal to all who ate of it.  The fruit of the tree of life was only for those whose ways were blameless in the sight of God.  Had Adam repented of his disobedience instead of trying to hide his sin, he could have eaten of the tree of life.  The tree of life is for those who partake of and have become the righteousness of God in Christ; it is for those who are overcomers now, and whose hope is fulfilled in their desire to please God.

The “tree of life” in the garden is symbolic of the spiritual life Adam first enjoyed.  This tree was the habitation of Elohim; it was the place where Adam enjoyed direct communication with his Creator.  Because Adam was transparent in soul and spirit, he had no shame for his nakedness.  The tree of life is referenced throughout scripture and associated with God’s attributes and eternal life:

·         Proverbs 3:13-18 How blessed is the man who finds wisdom, and the man who gains understanding.  For its profit is better than the profit of silver, and its gain than fine gold.  She is more precious than jewels; and nothing you desire compares with her.  Long life is in her right hand; in her left hand are riches and honor.  Her ways are pleasant ways, and all her paths are peace.  She is a tree of life to those who take hold of her, and happy are all who hold her fast.  NAS)

·         Proverbs 11:30 The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life, and he who is wise wins souls. (NAS)

·         Proverbs 13:12 Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but desire fulfilled is a tree of life.  (NAS)

·         Proverbs 15:4 A soothing tongue is a tree of life, but perversion in it crushes the spirit.  (NAS)

·         Revelation 2:7 'He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To him who overcomes, I will grant to eat of the tree of life, which is in the Paradise of God.'  (NAS)

·         Revelation 22:14 Blessed are those who wash their robes, that they may have the right to the tree of life, and may enter by the gates into the city.  (NAS)

The scripture verses listed above present a powerful argument for the tree of life being the dwelling place of God.  Righteousness, peace, wisdom and forgiveness are all extended to the hand of he who eats of the tree of life.  Why then did God prevent Adam from eating of its fruit?  One answer to this puzzling question is the fact Adam showed no remorse for his transgression.  He blamed his wife and hid himself from God.   According to Revelation 22:14 only those who wash their robes may have the right to the tree of life.

Something little focus and time has been spent describing in Christian circles is the nature of Adam.  The scriptures that mention him are not favorable, and every indicator is that he was selfish, arrogant, a slanderer, unloving toward his wife, and unrepentant.  This might begin to explain why the LORD forbid him from stretching out his hand and taking of the tree of life, but it does not clarify the reasons in light of God’s forgiveness and His everlasting mercy.

In other words, the heart of God is and always has been to offer redemption to His creation, and Adam would be no exception.  Thus we are left with the question, “Why prevent Adam from the tree of life altogether if the tree of life represents God’s presence?”  The passage in Genesis 3:22 has been mistranslated by nearly all Bible versions, and it warrants retranslation due to the nature of the content.  This will help give further insight into the true role of the cherubim and flaming sword stationed at the eat of the garden.

Genesis 3:22 - The Appropriate Translation (TAT)

He who exists as the strongest one says, “Behold, (expressing surprise), the man (Adam) has become united together with one of us (in collective thought), knowing by experience good and moral evil. And now, beware… lest he stretch forward his hand and use his authority to seize and carry away the tree of life and entirely consume it (in order to) be revived for the remainder of his life.”

By combining the NASU version of Genesis 3:23-24 with the TAT version of Genesis 3:22 the text makes more sense, and there is reason for God preventing the man (Adam) from eating from the tree of life after he had sinned.

Genesis 3:22 (TAT) with Genesis 3:23-24 (NASU) He who exists as the strongest one said, “Behold, (expressing surprise), the man (Adam) has become united together with one of us (in collective thought), knowing by experience good and moral evil.  And now, beware… lest he stretch forward his hand and use his authority to seize and carry away the tree of life, entirely consuming it (in order to) be revived (invigorated, revitalized, recharged, rejuvenated, & re-energized) for the remainder of his life.”  Therefore the LORD God sent him out from the Garden of Eden, to cultivate the ground from which he was taken.  So He drove the man out and at the east of the garden of Eden He stationed the cherubim and the flaming sword, which turned every direction to guard the way to the tree of life.  NASU
