In this section, we begin with the aftermath of the man’s transgression providing a description of the cherubim and flaming sword stationed at the east of Eden. To begin, a literal translation of Genesis 3:22-24 is needed:
Genesis 3:22-24 - The Appropriate Translation
3:22 He who exists as the strongest one said, “Behold, (expressing surprise), the man Adam has become united together with one of us in collective thought, knowing by experience good and moral evil. And now, beware… lest he stretch forward his hand and use his authority to seize and carry away the tree of life, entirely consuming it in order to be revived, invigorated, revitalized, recharged, rejuvenated, & re-energized for the remainder of his life.”
3:23 He who exists as the strongest one dismissed him (the man) from a part of the garden that was hedged about; (the place) where he lived luxuriously with free indulgence of (his) sensual pleasures, to (now) serve another by labor in the red soil from which he was taken.
3:24 So He banished the man to another place and at the forefront of the hedged garden of pleasure, He caused to dwell there the cherubim and blazing heat waves, by giving it the appearance of a hot desert floor with visible heat rising upward, and (the garden) transformed itself into a hedge of thorns, to protect the moral character of the tree of the living. God is talking not only to Lucifer, but also to the other cherubim present with him at the creation. God says to them, ““Behold, (expressing surprise), the man Adam has become united together with one of us in collective thought, knowing by experience good and moral evil.” Why does the Almighty God express surprise? The answer should be obvious, but theological prejudice prevents our minds from allowing us to see God as He is.
God had chosen, ordained and anointed Lucifer to be the covering cherub. Lucifer was selected for his evident blameless ways (Ezekiel 28:15). Lucifer is referred to as one who “covers” (Ezekiel 28:14). The reason he covers is because the role and function of cherubs is to “cover” a multitude of sins. They were a part of the inner sanctuary (i.e. – the inside of the Ark of the Covenant or Tabernacle).
Lucifer was familiar with the secret place of the Most High; he had sat in the place where Yahweh covered him with His own feathers (pinions). To be an anointed cherub meant you were one that had experiential understanding of God’s love and mercy.
Psalm 91:1-4 He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall remain stable and fixed under the shadow of the Almighty. 2 I will say of the Lord, “He is my Refuge and my Fortress, my God; on Him I lean and rely, and in Him I confidently trust!” 3 For then He will deliver you from the snare of the fowler and from the deadly pestilence. 4 Then He will cover you with His pinions, and under His wings shall you trust and find refuge; His truth and His faithfulness are a shield and a buckler. It is no wonder that God said with surprise, “Behold, the man Adam has become united together with one of us in collective thought, knowing by experience good and moral evil.” (Genesis 3:22) The cherubim were modeled after the nature of their Creator; they were made to be vessels of love and mercy. They were the wings of God (so to speak) extended to man. This indicates an intimate relationship between Yahweh and His cherubs who, likely, had lived in a heaven and earth life before this one existed. It is probable cherubim were men previously made into the likeness and image of God, and therefore chosen by Him to work with human beings in this creation.
Exodus 25:17-22 And you shall make a mercy seat a covering of pure gold, two cubits and a half long and a cubit and a half wide. 18 And you shall make two cherubim (winged angelic figures) of solid hammered gold on the two ends of the mercy seat. 19 Make one cherub on each end, making the cherubim of one piece with the mercy seat, on the two ends of it. 20 And the cherubim shall spread out their wings above, covering the mercy seat with their wings, facing each other and looking down toward the mercy seat. 21 You shall put the mercy seat on the top of the ark, and in the ark you shall put the Testimony; the ten Commandments that I will give you. 22 There I will meet with you and, from above the mercy seat, from between the two cherubim that are upon the ark of the Testimony; I will speak intimately with you of all, which I will give you in commandment to the Israelites. The greatest offense was not that Adam and his wife had eaten of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. The most evil of deeds was the utter betrayal foisted by the covering cherub. Lucifer was assigned to direct Adam to God’s mercy by teaching him (Adam) to repent for his disobedience. If Lucifer had done his job, he would have joined wings with his counterpart cherub and spread them over the man and his wife, and urged them to seek God’s forgiveness.
Proverbs 10:11-13 The mouth of the uncompromisingly righteous man is a well of life, but the mouth of the wicked conceals violence. 12 Hatred stirs up contentions, but love covers all transgressions. 13 On the lips of him who has discernment skillful and godly Wisdom is found. AMP
Lucifer was chock full of intellect (Ezekiel 28:12) and upon his lips was skillful discernment and godly wisdom (Proverbs 10:13). One thing he lacked was the quality characteristic of being, “uncompromisingly righteous” (Proverbs 10:10). It is so easy to compromise in small areas of our lives, however, Lucifer’s fall is warning to all who would consider using God’s glory for their own means.
The man became united together in collective thought with the serpent; his head and heart became self-serving, stubborn, self-righteous and full of pride. Instead of calling out for mercy to the One who created and loved him, the man tried to hide and cover his sin with his newly acquired knowledge, sewing together fig leaves. By comparing scripture with scripture, James gives an explanation of what it meant to be united in collective thought with the devil.
James 3:12-16 Can a fig tree, my brethren, produce olives, or a vine produce figs? Nor can salt water produce fresh. 13 Who among you is wise and understanding? Let him show by his good behavior his deeds in the gentleness of wisdom. 14 But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your heart, do not be arrogant and so lie against the truth. 15 This wisdom is not that which comes down from above, but is earthly, natural, and demonic. 16 For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there is disorder and every evil thing. Adam’s covering of fig leaves could never bring him righteousness and peace with God. The “fruit” of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil was rotten produce; it resulted in bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in Adam’s heart. He was also arrogant when he LIED against the truth and BLAMED his wife for giving him the forbidden fruit.
God commanded ADAM not to eat of the forbidden tree; He told him in the day he ate, he would surely die. More details about the genetic effects of Adam’s transgression will be discussed later, but for now, the focus is on the death of the human spirit. Peter’s epistle speaks of the condition of the Gentiles before they had good news preached to them, and he labels them as, “dead,” even though they SEEM alive in their bodies of flesh.
1 Peter 4:5-8 But they will give account to Him who is ready to judge the living and the dead. 6 For the gospel has for this purpose been preached even to those who are dead, that though they are judged in the flesh as men, they may live in the spirit according to the will of God. 7 The end of all things is near; therefore, be of sound judgment and sober spirit for the purpose of prayer. 8 Above all, keep fervent in your love for one another, because love covers a multitude of sins. Because there are two cherubs above the mercy seat, hammered of solid gold, (which matches the description of Lucifer before he sinned in Ezekiel 28:13), it is safe to suggest there were two cherubs ordained and anointed by God to guard the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.
One possibility is that the other cherub was Michael, the arch (chief in rank) angel. We find evidence that some sort of angelic grudge match continued between the once glorious Lucifer (now known as the devil) and Michael. Lucifer’s description descends in a downward spiral from covering cherub, to serpent, to dragon and devil (Read Revelation 12:7-12). As God’s plan for redemption is brought to completion, a war erupts in the heavenly realm between Michael and his angelic messengers and the devil (the dragon) and his messengers, and the devil is defeated, and cast down to earth, losing rank and privilege in the heavenly domain.
If there were two cherubs guarding the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, then why didn’t the other contest Satan’s fraudulent actions? Did he stand by and idly watch as Lucifer used his beauty, power and wisdom to corrupt the man and his wife?
The scripture does not furnish us with all of the answers to such questions; however, there is good reason to believe Lucifer’s status in the angelic ranks was elite compared to the other cherub, making it subject to his authority. This is the nature of delegated authority; it can be used or abused. We see evidence of this throughout the churches where there are good and benevolent shepherds and there are ministers who are using their authority as leaders for profit and/or ego.
Zechariah 3:1-2 Then he showed me Joshua the high priest standing before the angel of the LORD, and Satan standing at his right side to accuse him. 2 The LORD said to Satan, "The LORD rebuke you, Satan!” (From New International Version)
Jude 9 But even the archangel Michael, when he was disputing with the devil about the body of Moses, did not dare to bring a slanderous accusation against him, but said, "The Lord rebuke you!" (From New International Version)
Though the context in Zechariah and Jude are different, it seems logical that, “the angel of the LORD (Yahweh),” and, “the archangel Michael,” is one and the same. These two texts show the rank Satan has, even though he is working for evil. Michael said, “The LORD rebuke you!” to Satan because he did not have the rank to rebuke him head-on. This would account for why the second cherub assigned to guard the tree of the knowledge of good and evil did not intervene with Lucifer’s ploy to tempt the woman.
God dismissed Adam from a part of the garden that was hedged about with pleasure. This was the place man was created and where he lived luxuriously with free indulgence of his sensual pleasures. After Adam and his wife were banished from the garden of Eden, in addition to stationing cherubim there, God gave the east entrance (i.e. – forefront of the garden) the appearance of blazing heat waves. In other words, the LORD created the first desert environment or the illusion of the same as a deterrent so Adam could not defile the moral character of the tree of life.
By combining the Strong’s definitions for the Hebrew words in Genesis 3:24 translated as, “flaming sword,” (i.e. – lahat há chereb) the literal meaning is, “to blaze with the appearance of licking flames enwrapping (i.e. – distortion caused by rising heat waves), parching like a drought and making desolate.”
In layman’s terms, God parched the ground leading to the entrance of the garden and made it a barren desert; it was so hot and miserable the man Adam would never find it on his own. Picture the heat waves ascending from the desert floor and distorting the background; this image is what Adam saw when he looked backward after God booted him from the garden.
The byproduct of this blazing heat and drought was the garden transformed into a hedge of thorns. This was done in order to protect the moral character of the tree of the life (literally, “the tree of the living”).
This would not be the last time God used heat to resolve moral conflict. A prime example from the OT is the destruction of Sodom and Gomorra. God told Lot to get out of these debauched cities and not to look back. Then He rained down fire on them and they were no more. God means business and when He say something, consequences are without delay.
Genesis 3:17-19 And to Adam He said, “Because you have listened and given heed to the voice of your wife and have eaten of the tree of which I commanded you, saying, ‘You shall not eat of it,’ the ground is under a curse because of you; in sorrow and toil shall you eat of it all the days of your life. 18 Thorns also and thistles shall it bring forth for you, and you shall eat the plants of the field. 19 In the sweat of your face shall you eat bread until you return to the ground, for out of it you were taken; for dust you are and to dust you shall return.” AMP
Adam’s life in the garden was relatively cushy; he could satisfy every craving for food with the fruits growing there. He could also go to the tree of life, (literally, “the tree of the living”), and there he would find wisdom, knowledge, and understanding. Now he could not eat of the tree of life, and found it increasingly difficult to have dominion without God’s help. His decisions and choices were continuously subject to the wiles of the serpent and governed by mere human reasoning, judgment, and compromise.
Adam and his descendents must now decide what is good and evil based solely upon individual perception of right and wrong. Adam’s seed found out the boastful pride of life clouds the human understanding of what is “good” and what is “evil.”
James 4:15-17 Now listen, you who say, "Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business and make money." 14 Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes. 15 Instead, you ought to say, "If it is the Lord's will, we will live and do this or that." 16 As it is, you boast and brag. All such boasting is evil. 17 Anyone, then, who knows the good he ought to do and doesn't do it, sins. (From New International Version)
Note the contrast of “good” and “evil” in James 4:15-17; arrogant boasting inspires what is “evil” just as it did when Lucifer’s heart became proud on account of his beauty. The meaning of “good” is redefined altogether. Man’s perception of “good” is subject to a lower order of things. In His infinite mercy, God gives man the CHOICE to do “good” as each individual perceives it. Of course this is fallible because our conscience (conscience from the Latin meaning, “with knowledge”) operates by whatever instruction we accumulate in life. If that instruction aligns with God’s word we are more apt to choose what is “good” or at worst are more aware of when we don’t J.
Romans 7:7 Indeed I would not have known what sin was except through the law. (From New International Version)
The greatest “evil” is in living one’s life without consulting the will of God and recognizing death and eternity are but one breath or one heartbeat away. Adam’s sin brought natural death, but more important, it resulted in spiritual death. God told Adam:
Genesis 2:17 “But from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat from it you shall surely die." (NAS)
Adam lived to be 930 years old and died. How then did he “die” the day he ate of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil? The Hebrew word for “day” is defined from an unused root word meaning, “to be hot.” God sent heat to Eden creating a desert at the forefront of it. Death came to the Adam and his wife by virtue of the climate and topographical changes. Another kind of genetic death affected Adam and his descendents from that day and forward; advancements in genetic science prove the accuracy of the Biblical account.
Present day Ararat and the surrounding region is where the original land of Eden was located. This rugged and barren area attests to the truth of what God says. Mount Ararat is called “the mountain of God” in Eden (Ezekiel 28:14, 16); Lucifer was expelled from it the day he tempted the woman and the man. Mount Ararat is located in extreme eastern Turkey, near the border with Armenia and Iran. Except on the northwest, where a peak rising approximately 7,000 feet high unites with a lengthy crest, the mountain is completely inaccessible, being surrounded on all other sides by elevated plains ranging from 2,500 to 4,500 feet above sea level.
From an elevation of 8,800 feet Mount Ararat rises in two peaks, known as Great Ararat (16,854 feet) and Little Ararat (840 feet). Above the 14,000-foot level, Great Ararat is continuously covered with snow. Plant life, consisting for the most part of grass, is essentially restricted to the area between 5,000 and 11,000 feet. Noah's ark landed on the “mountains of Ararat” after the flood (Genesis 8:4). Great Ararat was first climbed in modern times in 1829. On July 2, 1840, gigantic segments of the mountain were torn loose by a ferocious earthquake. The resulting landslide buried a village and a convent on its lower slopes. An American expedition climbed Mount Ararat in the summer of 1949 in a futile hunt for authentication of the reality of Noah's ark. The latest expeditions report finding timbers believed to have come from the ark.
The bottom line is that God forbade man from touching the tree of life and to this day, that word of God can be taken quite literally. Of course the tree of life is not confined to a mountainous region somewhere in the eastern hemisphere, but the inaccessibility to Ararat serves as a sort of divine monument attesting to the fact God means what He says. Is it any wonder that Noah’s ark came to rest upon this locale? The word “Ararat” is defined as follows:

It took just under one thousand years of human existence without the tree of life for mankind to turn this place into a violent mess (Genesis 6:11-13). God sent a deluge by opening up the earth’s crust, probably using seismic activity to unleash fury upon the world’s inhabitants (Genesis 7:11-12). In addition, the rain descended for a period of forty day and nights (the Biblical amount of time for testing), and then, at long last the ark came to rest on the very place where God first gave His commandment to Adam, whom He created from the dust of the earth.
God changed the name of “the mountain of God” to “Ararat,” meaning, “the curse reversed.” Adam brought evil upon himself, humanity and the earth’s soil when he disobeyed God. In His infinite mercy the Creator did not leave His offspring completely destitute, but reversed the SPIRITUAL death by making His first covenant with man through Noah. Those that lived BEFORE the covenant with Noah would have to wait a LONG time until Christ descended and proclaimed the release of the righteous from Sheol.
1 Peter 3:18-20 For Christ the Messiah Himself died for sins once for all, the Righteous for the unrighteous (the Just for the unjust, the Innocent for the guilty), that He might bring us to God. In His human body He was put to death, but He was made alive in the spirit, 19 In which He went and preached to the spirits in prison, 20 The souls of those who long before in the days of Noah had been disobedient, when God's patience waited during the building of the ark in which a few people, actually eight in number, were saved through water. The body generates heat and aerobic respiration through the DNA known as mitochondria. Think of mitochondria as the life and energy cells in the human body; without them, we die. Once Adam brought evil upon himself, the likelihood is that mitochondrion of the male sperm was unable to penetrate the female egg during fertilization. The male mitochondria were shifted from the head to the tail of the sperm cells. The “day” Adam sinned his mitochondria was corrupted, interrupting the perfect mitochondrial union between male sperm and female egg, resulting in genetic defect and eventual death to the human DNA.
Genesis 2:17 - “Day” = (OT: 3117); yowm; this Hebrew word means, “to be hot; as in the warmest hours of the day, whether literal (from sunrise to sunset, or from one sunset to the next), or figurative (a space of time defined by an associated term).”
God warned Adam that in the “hot” part of the day he would “surely die.” Before Adam partook of the knowledge of evil, a mist used to rise from the earth’s surface and water the whole surface of the ground.
Genesis 2:4-6 This is the account of the heavens and the earth when they were created, in the day that the LORD God made earth and heaven. 5 Now no shrub of the field was yet in the earth, and no plant of the field had yet sprouted, for the LORD God had not sent rain upon the earth; and there was no man to cultivate the ground. 6 But a mist used to rise from the earth and water the whole surface of the ground. NAS
The Hebrew word for “mist” in Genesis 2:6 is, “Wª'eed” and it means, “mist, fog, or vapor.” In Eden, the garden of God, there was no need for rain upon the earth, because God had created the ultimate biosphere. The Book of Job, notable for its antiquity, and often regarded as the oldest book of canon, describes the natural process set in motion by the Creator, whereby equilibrium was maintained.
Job 36:27-29 For He draws up the drops of water, which distil as rain from His vapor, 28, which the skies pour down, and drop abundantly upon mankind. 29 Not only that but can anyone understand the spreadings of the clouds or the thunderings of His pavilion? AMP
Job uses the same Hebrew word “Wª'eed” in Job 36:27, but here it has been translated as “vapor” by the Amplified Bible. Presently our biosphere is made up of the earth’s atmosphere (air), soil, and water and it ranges from about six miles high to the very depths of the ocean floor. The biosphere is essential for sustaining life on our planet and its equilibrium depends on efficient temperature regulation, utilizing heat from sunrays to circulate moisture (clouds, rain etc) and furnish the planet with essential nutrients.
When God told Adam the ground was “cursed” because of his willful disobedience, this was the introduction of decay to the earth. Decay is putrefaction; it is the natural breakdown of complex organic compounds into simpler substances. Decay occurs in dead plant and animal tissue and is essential to the cycle of life.
Since Adam violated God’s commandment not to eat the fruit of the knowledge of good and evil, the natural consequence for his behavior was death. With necrotic plant and animal tissue comes bacteria; with bacteria comes infection; with infection comes disease; with disease comes death. God’s laws violated, a new order of dynamics was introduced; the second law of thermodynamics defines a property called entropy.
Entropy can be thought of as a measure of how close a system is to equilibrium; it can also be thought of as a measure of the disorder in the system. The entropy or disorder of an isolated system can never decrease. When an isolated organism reaches a condition of utmost entropy, it can no longer experience change: It has reached equilibrium.
Since the moment when God said to Adam, “the ground is under a curse because of you,” nature seems to have a preference for disorder, disarray and pandemonium. The second law of thermodynamics requires that, in the absence of exertion, warmth cannot be transmitted from a region that exists at a lower temperature to one that exists at a higher temperature. This means that the constant temperature in the garden of Eden, existing at substantially lower levels than the arid desert region in which Adam was forced to live when he was banished, subjected him to the decomposition created by exposure to the suns rays.
Because of Adam’s disobedience and refusal to repent and seek God’s forgiveness, the definition of equilibrium for the planet and its inhabitants changed from symmetry, balance and stability to ever changing variable affects brought on by entropy, disorder, and chaos. The only good and lasting equilibrium man can ever hope to achieve will come through divine reconciliation and God’s plan for redemption. The scripture mentions the physical effects of the second law of thermodynamics such as diseases, planetary destruction through earthquakes, plagues, drought, floods and so on. Please take time to read Deuteronomy 28:1-68.
Deuteronomy 28:15, 20 But if you will not obey the voice of the Lord your God, being watchful to do all His commandments and His statutes which I command you this day, then all these curses shall come upon you and overtake you… 20 The Lord shall send you curses, confusion, and rebuke in every enterprise to which you set your hand, until you are destroyed, perishing quickly because of the evil of your doings by which you have forsaken Him. The perfect biosphere God created was interrupted with the introduction of decay (death). Though the visible results were not instantaneously noticeable to Adam they still existed. The serpent used half-truths to beguile Eve; by his cunning words her mind was corrupted and seduced (2 Corinthians 11:3).
Lucifer used his God-given intellect and understanding of the creation to offer something that APPEARED to be true saying, “You shall not surely die, for God knows that in the day you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing the difference between good and evil and blessing and calamity.”
Most Christians are pretty hard on Eve and quickly critique her compromise with God’s commandment, but few take time to contemplate what it was like to experience the very first temptation. There were no wars, or violence, no gangs or drug dealers, no serial murderers or rapists. No one had ever stolen anything and there was no shame whatsoever for being completely naked. No disease or death existed, and the knowledge of the same was completely foreign to the man and his wife.
In the garden, all of God’s creation was, “very good” (Genesis 1:31). The climate was ideal and far better than Maui on the best of days. Fruits and nuts grew in great abundance year round, and were readily available to pick for eating. No negative feelings or emotions existed, and there was no external influence such as television, radio, Internet, newspaper, magazines or books to induce moral depravity or immoral values.
One could go on and on declaring the greatness of the first creation of God; this much has been provided to illustrate a point: Eve would have no reason to doubt the words of the serpent. Her inner self told her it was wrong to disobey the commandment given to her husband by God. Just the same, she had not personally received the commandment from God; she was relying on the man to accurately transmit it to her, and help guide her in keeping it. Besides all of this, she had never seen anything actually “die” so what point of reference would she have to weigh against Lucifer’s words? Her mind was ripe for seduction, and the serpent took full advantage of her.
There is a valuable lesson for us in this scenario; sin does not always reveal its consequence, but it remains to this day as deadly as when it first began.
Numbers 32:23 You have sinned against the LORD, and be sure your sin will find you out. NASU
Galatians 6:7-8 Do not be deceived and deluded and misled; God will not allow Himself to be sneered at (scorned, disdained, or mocked by mere pretensions or professions, or by His precepts being set aside). He inevitably deludes himself who attempts to delude God. For whatever a man sows, that and that only is what he will reap. 8 For he who sows to his own flesh (lower nature, sensuality) will from the flesh reap decay and ruin and destruction, but he who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life. Did Adam and Eve feel their bodies dying the moment they ate of the knowledge of evil? No one knows this but God, but one thing is certain… they felt shame for the first time and were suddenly aware of their nakedness. This is perhaps the most intriguing of reactions because it shows the absolute innocence and purity of soul and spirit prior to their transgression. Throughout the entire tenor of scripture shame has always been associated with an awareness of one’s own nakedness.
Isaiah 47:3 "Your nakedness will be uncovered, your shame also will be exposed; I will take vengeance and will not spare a man." NAS (Read also Genesis 9:22-23; Exodus 20:26; Leviticus 18:6-19; 20:11-21; 1 Samuel 20:30; Lamentations 1:8; Ezekiel 16:8, 36-37; 22:10; 23:10, 18, 29; Hosea 2:9; Micah 1:11; Nahum 3:5; Habakkuk 2:15-16)
Lucifer had corrupted the gold that was inside of him; he had turned the precious glory of God into an asset for self-gain and profit. He is not unlike many television ministers today preaching a message to delude and seduce listeners into being willing partakers of the knowledge of evil. Christians have become distasteful to God; they are lukewarm; they THINK they are rich and increased with blessings, but do not realize they are poor, miserable, blind and naked. In the last days, they can only rid themselves of the shame of their nakedness buying gold that has been refined in the fire.
Revelation 3:17-19 ‘Because you say, "I am rich, and have become wealthy, and have need of nothing," and you do not know that you are wretched and miserable and poor and blind and naked, 18 I (Jesus) advise you to buy from me gold refined by fire, that you may become rich, and white garments, that you may clothe yourself, and that the shame of your nakedness may not be revealed; and eye salve to anoint your eyes, that you may see. 19 Those whom I love, I reprove and discipline; be zealous therefore, and repent.’ NAS
The necrotic tissue of dead or dying plants and animals is broken down by a combination of physical and chemical processes. It is a scientific fact that the human body experiences cellular death as the result of direct exposure to sunlight’s UV rays. Within the first 1000 years of earth’s history, a global flood in the days of Noah would forever alter the earth’s axis, exposing human beings to even more intense direct sunlight, thereby accelerating the death process.
The Hebrew word for “die” is “muwth” (OT: 4191) and it means, “to die” (literally or figuratively); causatively, it means, “to kill.” In Genesis 2:17 (“… you shall surely die") the Hebrew word for “die” (muwth) is in the Qal Infinitive Absolute, and indicates the process of death would, with absolute certainty, begin the very moment Adam sinned. Some scholars say that muwth conveys absolute separation from God, but nowhere in scripture is this positively affirmed.
Causatively, muwth also means, “to kill.” After Adam and Eve sinned, it did not take very long for one man to “kill” another, as in the case of Cain and Abel. This was the very first murder, and it was motivated by Cain’s jealousy of and his anger towards his brother Abel (READ Genesis 4: 4-16).
In the day Adam sinned, he unknowingly introduced hatred, anger, and murder into his genetic lineage. Mankind has hated and murdered ever since this horrible day. Ironically, the Hebrew word “muwth” is the EXACT OPPOSITE of the “likeness” (demuwth) of God.
The Hebrew word “demuwth” originates from a Hebrew root word meaning, “to liken, model or resemble.” Before Adam sinned, he was a representative of God; he was likened unto God; furthermore, the scripture indicates Adam may never have experienced death. He exchanged living by every word of God for the knowledge (so-called) of good and evil. From that point onward, Adam’s descendents would not be made in God’s likeness. Instead, all of his direct bloodline, (including EVERYONE, except Jesus), would be made in his own “imprecise” likeness.
Genesis 5:3 When Adam had lived one hundred and thirty years, he became the father of a son in his own likeness, according to his image, and named him Seth. (NAS)
Genesis 1:26 reads literally, “In the future, let us make, with existing material, human beings who will be our imprecise, instrumental representative figure, and as (function as) our correspondent(s).”
Man could not be made into a PRECISE instrumental representative figure because he had limitations; unlike God (who is spirit) and the cherubim with God, Adam was created from the dust of the earth. However, his character could be “made” like God and LIKE His elect messengers (the cherubim), but this involves a “process.”
Making man is forming him on the inside; it is inducing thought in him and compelling him to cooperate with the whole process. It is creating and constituting man’s moral fiber, mental and emotional temperament and spiritual disposition. After Adam sinned, he continued being “made”; however, the course of his life was permanently altered and he leaned heavily in the direction of being made into the corruptible imprecise image (resemblance) of Satan.
When God addressed the cherubim and said, “Let us make man in our image,” Lucifer was one of the elite cherubs and was selected to play a key role. Lucifer’s name changed from “light bearer” to “adversary” when he betrayed the Most High. When Adam intentionally disobeyed God’s commandment and untied together in collective thought with the serpent, he put himself in opposition to God.
Job 29:2-5 Oh, that I were as in the months of old, as in the days when God watched over me, when His lamp shone above and upon my head and by His light I walked through darkness; as I was in the prime ripeness of my days, when the friendship and counsel of God were over my tent, when the Almighty was yet with me…” AMP
James 4:1-6 What causes fights and quarrels among you? Don't they come from your desires that battle within you? You want something but don't get it. You kill and covet, but you cannot have what you want. You quarrel and fight. You do not have, because you do not ask God. When you ask, you do not receive; because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures. Y ou adulterous people, don't you know that friendship with the world is hatred toward God? Anyone who chooses to be a friend of the world becomes an enemy of God. Or do you think Scripture says without reason that the spirit he caused to live in us envies intensely? But he gives us more grace. That is why Scripture says: "God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble." (NIV)
After Adam sinned audible communication between God and man continued, albeit was less frequent and often involved angelic mediators. God spoke to Adam with open rebuke and judgment for his disobedience.
Genesis 3:17 Then to Adam He said,” Because you have heeded the voice of your wife, and have eaten from the tree of which I commanded you, saying, 'You shall not eat of it': Cursed is the ground for your sake; in toil you shall eat of it all the days of your life.” NKJV
God told Adam the ground was, “cursed,” because of him; the Hebrew word used in the text of Genesis 3:17 enhances our understanding of what actually happened at that moment:
Genesis 3:17 - “Cursed” = (OT: 779); 'aruwraah; to execrate; the primary sense of which is to separate. It means to imprecate evil on. Imprecation is the act invoking evil on any one; it is calling for evil on one's self or another.
God cannot call evil upon Himself nor does He “invoke” evil upon another. His words to Adam imply THE MAN was imprecating evil UPON HIMSELF. Genesis 3:17 should read as follows:
The Hebrew word ‘adamah is generally translated as, “ground,” in Genesis 3:17, “Cursed is the ground because of you…” The literal meaning of the word ‘adamah is soil, from its general redness. Adamah comes from a root word, ‘adam meaning, “ruddy, to show blood (in the face), i.e. flush or turn rosy.”
Ancient Hebrews used ‘adam as a euphemism for lively flesh color or the color of the human skin in high health. Even in our English language we say ruddy cheeks, ruddy lips, a ruddy face or skin, a ruddy youth; and in poetic language, ruddy fruit; however, the word ruddy is chiefly applied to the human skin.
Contrary to popular theology God did NOT invoke a curse upon the soil in Genesis 3:17. Instead, it was ADAM who invited evil to have access to human genetics and the pure soil from whence he was made. One result of introducing evil upon the soil was the proliferation of thorns and thistles (i.e. – weeds). Likewise, disease is the introduction of evil into the redness of healthy tissue.
Disease, from, “dis,” and, “ease,” in its primary sense means, “pain, uneasiness, and distress.” Adam was taken from his life of “ease” and an environment of pleasure (Eden means, “pleasure”) and took to himself the intimate, “knowledge of evil.”
Adam would now toil in the ground and eat what his hands planted, cultivated and harvested. His decision to “know” evil was fulfilled and he brought distress upon himself, his descendents and upon every living creature. The introduction of evil affected equilibrium; it changed from order to disorder and the state of living body organs’ natural functions were interrupted and disturbed.
This disruption took place because evil was invoked by man’s choice. Disease came either by defective or preternatural action (the influence of the Satan and his demonic messengers) and this is the likely origin of viruses as we know them. The first effect of disease was uneasiness or pain, and the ultimate effect was death.
At first disease may have affected a particular limb or part of the body. Soon men found disease affecting their whole body. Disease affected not only humans but also created disorders of other animals and the derangement of the vegetative functions of plants. The shafts of disease shot across man’s path in such a variety of courses, eventually the atmosphere of human life was darkened by their number, and the escape of an individual became possible only through the miraculous. Such was the case of Enoch who walked with God and was taken before disease could corrupt his body of flesh.
Genesis 5:24 with Hebrews 11:5 And Enoch walked in habitual fellowship with God; and he was not, for God took him home with Him. Because of faith Enoch was caught up and transferred to heaven, so that he did not have a glimpse of death; and he was not found, because God had translated him. For even before he was taken to heaven, he received testimony still on record that he had pleased and been satisfactory to God. AMP
Disease interrupts or impairs any or all the natural and regular functions of several organs of a living body. It afflicts with pain or sickness to make a person morbid. But disease doesn’t stop with the physical body; it includes disordered state of the mind or intellect, by which a person’s ability to reason is impaired. Then there is the worse disease of them all… sickness of the heart.
Disease spread quickly to societies and cultures; today we know these ills as vices or corrupt state of morals. Vices are called moral diseases. For example, a wise man converses with the wicked, as a physician with the sick, not to catch the disease, but to cure it. This is why God needed to send a redeemer; but it had to be one who understood from experience what it was like to know the ill effects of evil without actually “knowing” evil. This is why Jesus had to be tempted and tried, and made perfect by the things that he suffered.
God established protection for the tree of life, by giving the entrance to Eden’s garden the appearance of a hot desert floor with visible heat rising upward. This caused the garden to be transformed into a hedge of thorns and thistles. Cherubim were then stationed to protect the moral character of the tree of the life. Later we will see how Jesus conquered death and disease by walking in total obedience and submitting in every respect to the will of God, being tempted in the desert, then later with a crown of thorns. He became a tree of life by being nailed to a tree of evil. He conquered the tempter by refusing to eat of his baited “knowledge” and lived by every word proceeding from the mouth of God. We will learn how those that believe in Jesus have the right also to eat of the tree of life, not because of what they have done, but by virtue of what HE did.
